About this time last year, I moved to Tokyo on a student visa and put in an application for a working visa. I was awaiting my own immigration status update for about 6 weeks, and I was unable to work during that time. Even under very positive and safe circumstances, it was one of the most uncertain and stressful experiences I've ever gone through. Because of that, I have endless empathy and compassion towards people who immigrate. America would be nothing without immigrants.
